What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the systemic use of Essential Oils in Holistic Treatments to improve physical and emotional well-being. Essential oils are volatile substances extracted from a single botanical source (plant) by distillation or expression, possessing distinctive therapeutic properties, which can be utilised to improve health and prevent disease.

Aromatherapy has been around for 6000 years, used by the Greeks, Romans and ancient Egyptians. Modern Aromatherapy owes its existence to the French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse who coined the term Aromatherapy around 1930. Essential Oils were extensively used during World War II by the French army surgeon Dr. Jean Valnet. The modern use of Essential Oils as a Holistic Therapy is credited to Madame Marguerite Maury.

Can Aromatherapy Help You?

Hippocrates, the father of medicine, wrote in the 5th century B.C. “The way to health is to have a scented bath and massage every day. Massage eliminates the waste products of nutrition and the poisons of fatigue”. Essential Oils work on both the physical level and on the emotional level. In Aromatherapy, a complete Holistic view is taken to ensure the best possible results are obtained. With the ever increasing complications resulting from the use of synthetic chemicals, many people now prefer to choose natural products to complement their orthodox Treatments.

Who Can Benefit From Aromatherapy?

Research has shown that when Essential Oils are applied to the skin or inhaled, they are absorbed into the bloodstream and metabolised in the body. In this way, everyone can benefit from the properties contained within the Essential Oils applied during an Aromatherapy Treatment, all different backgrounds and ages.

What Happens During And After Aromatherapy?

On your first visit the Aromatherapist will carry out a consultation. This consultation will help the Therapist to select the specific Essential Oils for you and these will then be blended with carrier oils. You will be asked to lie on a Treatment couch to receive your massage. You will be discreetly covered with towels, only the area being treated will been uncovered. After your Treatment, you should drink plenty of water to assist the body’s flushing process.
